See who registered a domain, when it expires, where its DNS points, and whether it could be moved.
WHOIS is the public register of who is responsible for a domain: the registrar it was bought through, when it was created, when it expires, the nameservers it delegates to, and a set of status codes that say what the domain can and cannot do right now. This page asks the registry that runs the extension, follows the referral to the registrar's own record where there is one, and shows you what came back, unedited, underneath a plain reading of it.
The status codes are the part worth reading and the part nobody explains. clientTransferProhibited is the transfer lock, and it should be on: it is what stops a domain being moved by someone who has guessed a password. clientHold or serverHold means the domain is not resolving at all, usually an unpaid renewal or an unverified contact address, and it is the first thing to check when a site vanished overnight. pendingDelete and redemptionPeriod are the end of the line: the registration has lapsed and there is a short, paid window to get it back before it is released to anyone.
Since 2018 most of the contact details are redacted. A record that says REDACTED FOR PRIVACY is not broken and is not hiding anything unusual; it is how registrars now comply with privacy law. What is still published, and still useful, is everything above: the registrar, the dates, the nameservers and the locks. If you need to reach the owner, the registrar's abuse contact in the raw record is the route that works.
If the registry has no record of it, the page says it looks unregistered and links to our store, which checks again with the registrar before you can pay. A WHOIS "no match" is a very good sign and not a guarantee: premium names and recently dropped names sometimes show as free and are not.
Unlock it at the current registrar, ask them for the authorisation code, and start the transfer from our store with that code. A domain registered or transferred in the last 60 days cannot move yet; registries enforce that, not us. The transfer adds a year to the registration, so nothing is lost.
